Retreat at the Lake
Set on a stunning property overlooking Lake Champlain, this home was designed as a forever retreat for a couple entering retirement. After years of collecting inspiration, they arrived with photographs from a beloved Southern Living feature—drawn to the warmth, symmetry, and welcoming porches of classic Southern architecture.
Translating a Southern vernacular to northern Vermont required thoughtful adaptation. Roof pitches, structural spans, snow loads, and material durability all demanded a more robust approach. To achieve the open, airy aesthetic they admired, we introduced substantial steel beams, allowing for expansive interior spaces and generous openings while meeting the structural demands of the climate.
The covered front porch creates a gracious arrival experience, welcoming guests with a sense of hospitality rooted in tradition. On the lake side, a deep covered porch becomes the heart of the home during the warmer months—a perfect setting for entertaining, dining, and taking in long views of the water. Large glass doors dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior living, allowing summer breezes and lake views to flow effortlessly through the main living spaces.
Designed for longevity and comfort, the home features a first-floor primary suite to support one-level living. Upstairs, two spacious guest suites provide privacy and comfort for visiting family and friends—ensuring the home is as functional as it is beautiful.
The result is a residence that honors Southern charm while embracing the strength and resilience required for life in Vermont.
