Restoring the Heart  of a Vermont Cape

This project involved transforming an old Vermont Cape, cherished as a second home for years, into a primary residence full of charm and timeless beauty. Originally built in the 1870s, the home had a 1950s addition that, like many from that era, had deteriorated significantly. Fortunately, the original structure was in remarkably good condition, offering a solid foundation for a full renovation.

Our design philosophy embraced the idea that less is more. By removing the failing addition, we were able to focus on restoring the original home to its full glory. This intentional reduction in square footage allowed us to prioritize quality, craftsmanship, and authenticity over unnecessary expansion.

Every detail of the renovation was guided by a respect for the home's historic character. The updated design preserved the Cape’s timeless appeal while incorporating subtle modern upgrades to enhance livability and comfort.

This project is a celebration of simplicity, history, and the enduring charm of Vermont architecture—proving that sometimes, the best way forward is to honor the past.
